The Puerto Rico Islanders were defeated in El Salvador tonight by Isidro Metapan 2-0. This represents the first time in four appearences in the CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Stage where the Islanders have lost the away leg of the two leg tie.
The second leg versus Metapan will be held next Wednesday, August 3rd in Bayamon. In this, the preliminary stage of the tournament, ties are contested over two legs with the winner being determined by aggregate goals scored. The away goals rule does apply, except in extra time of the second leg. If the ties are level after 210 minutes, penalties will decide a winner. The winning team advances to the group stage of the event.
The Islanders must overcome a two goal deficit in order to advance to the group stages of the 2011-2012 tournament.
