BAYAMON, PR. (JULY 20, 2011) – The second-place Puerto Rico Islanders, 8-5-4 (W-T-L), beat the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, 3-9-5 (W-T-L) 3-1 continuing thier home unbeaten streak.. The Strikers took the lead on an own-goal but the Islanders scored three unawnsered goals propeling the Islanders to a seven game unbeaten streak. The Islanders travel to El salvador to play the first leg of CONCACAF Champions League on Wensday July 27th.
Early in the match, at the 8 minute mark, Strikers defender Martyn Lancaster went down with an apparent injury and Cristian Arrieta had to be brought in as a substitute.
The Strikers took the lead in the 18th minute when Eduardo Coudet took a free kick from 30 yards out. The shot was headed by the Islanders Jarad Van Schaik and into the net for an own-goal making it 1-0 for Fort Lauderdale.
Van Schaik would redeem himself two minutes into first half stoppage time when he would beat Strikers goalkeeper Nic Platter, who had come on for an injured Matt Glaeser, with a left-footed shot to tie the game at 1-1.
The Strikers finished the game with 10 men after Eduardo Coudet was shown a red card for dissent after Strikers defender Cristian Arrieta was called for a foul in the penalty area against Jonathan Fana. David Foley scored his fourth goal of the season to make the score 2-1 Puerto Rico.
