San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, July 11, 2011  –  The Puerto Rico Islanders leading goal scorer, Jonathan Faña scored two goals this past weekend, aiding the Dominican Republic's victory against Anguila. With the triumph, the Domincan Republic reaches the CONCACAF group stage with the hopes of qualifying to the World Cup 2014.

“We are proud that he has helped the Dominican Republic qualify to the group stages of CONCACAF. It’s alot of pressure for Jonathan, he is a star player for his national team and he is expected to do good, and score a lot of goals. We are looking forward to him coming back, and hopefully he can continue to contribute in the NASL and the CONCACAF Champions League,” expressed  Colin Clarke, Head Coach.

Faña, who leads the Islanders with eight goals this season, scored in the 42nd  min on Friday, helping the Dominican Republic win the first leg 2-0. On Sunday, July 10th,  Faña scored a brilliant goal, slipping the ball between the legs of Anguila goalkeeper Ryan Liddir, contributing to the 4-0 victory over the Caribbean side. With this win the Dominican Republic now looks to advance past the group stage into the semifinal stage of qualifying where they could face one or more of the following countries: the United States, Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, Costa Rica or Cuba.

The Islanders next travel to Blaine, Minn., Sunday July 17th to square off against the NSC Minnesota Stars. The “Orange Troop” returns to Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium on Wednesday July 20, to face off against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
