In a highly contested, and often times physical, match the Puerto Rico Islanders earned a point after a 1-1 draw in Fort Lauderdale. With this draw, the Islanders move to 5-3-4 with 18 points.
The first half of the match saw constant back and forth action but neither team could get on the scoring sheet. Puerto Rico came the closest to breaking the stalemate with two close shots on goal but both teams would go into the locker room at the half tied at 0 - 0.
It was clear during the second half that both teams were going for the 3 points. Just a few minutes into the half, Fort Lauderdale’s Shriver received a pass from Coudet and fired a shot on goal but the Islanders’ Ray Burse managed to stop the shot with a diving save to his right. Barely a minute later, David Foley threatened the Strikers’ goal with a shot of his own but Fort Lauderdale’s keep managed another save.
The stalemate finally broke at the 65th minute when Dominican international Jonathan Faña headed the ball to the back of the net after a corner kick to put the Islanders on top 1-0, scoring his 7th goal of the 2011 NASL season. The celebration would be short lived as two ex-Islanders managed to spoil the party for the Islanders little over 10 minutes after Faña’s goal. In the 76th minute, Cristian Arrieta found Martin Nuñez on a cross to head it home and seal the score at 1-1.
Both teams continued looking for the win for the remainder of the game but neither side found the back of the net again. The referee would mark the end of the game and the score remained 1-1.
The Puerto Rico Islanders now travel to Montreal where they will face the Impact on Wednesday at 7:30pm.
