The Puerto Rico Islanders fans will have the opportunity to choose their “Player of the Year” . This award is brought to you by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.
“The Puerto Rico Islanders have always had some of the most passionate fans in the NASL. I think this is an excellent opportunity for the fans to us tell who their favorite players are. Our supporters' group has always been there to support not only the club but soccer on the island. We encourage all fans to log on to the Puerto Rico Islanders Facebook page and vote,” said Director of Communications Ignacio Rodríguez-Argote.
Below are the three nominees for “Fan Player of the Year".
Born in Chelmsford, Essex (UK), goalkeeper Richard Martin has become a vital member of the Puerto Rico Islanders squad since joining the club from Yeovil Town in 2011.
Prior to joining the North American Soccer League, Richard had spent an extensive amount time in the English football league with the likes of Brighton, Crawley and, most notably, current Premier League Champions Manchester City.
Hector "Pito" Ramos
In Héctor 'Pito Ramos the Puerto Rico Islanders have an exciting young striker with huge potential. Now 22, and capped seventeen times for Puerto Rico, he originally joined the Club on loan from Criollos de Caguas FC in 2011, where he instantly impressed the technical staff.
With a recent brace against Isidro Metapán, he further highlighted his potential and recently spoke of his hope that next season can be a break out year, as he looks to fight for a striker place alongside the Club’s more experienced options.
The youngest of three children - Richard Martinez has been an instant fan favorite with the Islanders since singing with the Club in 2010.
An explosive defender, with over seventy appearances for the Islanders, he made his debut for the Club in the 2010 CFU Clubs Championship against Haitian side Racing des Gonaives and has already tasted success with the "Tropa Naranja", winning the USSF D2 Pro League and CFU Clubs Championship.
A native of Highland, New York, he chose to represent Puerto Rico at international level and has so far amassed sixteen caps. Admittedly disappointed with the premature end to his season, Martínez revealed he has been pleased with the progress the Club has made this year.
Fans will be able to vote from Saturday, November 3rd to Sunday, December 2nd. The winner will be announced on Monday, December 3rd.
