This Saturday, September 22nd at 7:30pm the Puerto Rico Islanders will dedicate their match against the Silverbacks to breast cancer survivors and support the Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure by wearing pink during their pregame warm ups. For this season’s last match, visitors who sport a pink ribbon will be able to enter the game free of charge. Nonetheless, volunteers from Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure will incite everyone to make a $5.00 donation for a chance to win an Islanders’ special edition jerseys.
Winners will be announced during the game. They will receive their jersey on October 16 at the players’ Award Night, which will be open to public for the first time this year, and will be celebrated at Coaches. Players will also sport their pink jerseys on their postseason match on September 30th at 6:00pm in solidarity with Race for the Cure, which will be held that day, simultaneously.
From the beginning of the season, several Islanders players have sponsored several foundations. Midfielder Christopher Nurse spearheads the fundraising project for Susan G. Komen, since his mother died of cancer. In 2010, Nurse raised nearly $5,000 through team jersey raffles.
