The Puerto Rico Islanders are pleased to announce the signing of defender Jamie Cunningham for the 2011 NASL season, CFU Club Champions Cup and eventually the CONCACAF Champions League.
Cunningham joins the Islanders after a successful collegiate career as captain of Fort Lewis College soccer team in Colorado, where he received honors such as Daktronics All America, First Team NSCAA, First Team Daktronics All Central Region, First Team All RMAC, among others. And he finished his career with 83 games played, scoring 17 goals and 5 assists.
“We are very excited with Cunningham’s signing. He is a young defender that will bring depth to our roster. He worked very hard during pre-season and earned a spot on our team, and will now fight for a starting position” said Islanders assistant coach Adrian Whitbread.
“I am very honored to be representing one of the best franchises in the NASL and I’m very happy in Puerto Rico. The hard work in pre-season is almost over and I am excited to get on with the season and help the Puerto Rico Islanders towards another championship”, said Cunningham.
The 2010 USSF D-2 Champions will begin their 2011 NASL season on April 9th when they face Carolina Railhawks at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.The CFU Championship will initiate in Puerto Rico on April 23rd when they will face Walking Boyz, Co of Surinam.
The Islanders will have their home opener on April 26 against the NSC Minnesota Stars at the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium, also known as “La Islandera”.
**Note: CFU 2nd round home game date changed from April 13th to April 23rd due to Walking Boyz, Co.'s flight schedule troubles. Second leg will be played on May 7th in Surinam.
