Cary, North Carolina (June 2, 2012) - The Puerto Rico Islanders lost their first game in six matches, including CFU, when they fell 1 - 2 to the Carolina RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park.
"Everybody has to be held responsible whether they go on the field or working off of it, I will always look at myself first and am very disappointed to have lost tonight, but if we dont defend our goal with our lives, thats what happens. We are still in first place in the league but we need to improve and the only way to do that is to stick together and work even harder," said Head Coach Adrian Whitbread
Both teams started their offense early in the match. In the 6th minute, Islanders’ forward David Foley crossed a corner that reached Tyler Wilson, but Wilson didn't manage to put it in the back of the net. Jonathan Faña penetrated the RailHawks defense in the 12th minute and created a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper, but his shot went wide.
It wasn't long before the Carolina RailHawks answered with offensive chance of their own. In the 17th minute Shriver reached the box, but his shot sailed over the crossbar. Shriver got another chance on net, but this time his shot was denied by a great save by Richard Martin.
Tensions built up in WakeMed Soccer Park by the end of the first half after Gale Agbossoumonde fouled Jonathan Faña and was shown a straight red card.
The Carolina RailHawks started the second half one man down, but that didn't keep them from reaching the box in several occasions. The Railhawks first goal arrived in the 51st minute when Alexis Rivera tried to clear the ball off the online after a Railhawks free kick, but knocked it into his own net, giving Carolina a 1-0 advantage.
The Puerto Rico Islanders continued to apply pressure and tried to get on the scoreboard on different occasions. In the 63rd minute Fojo, tried to penetrate the Railhawks defense but his shot sailed over the cross bar. It wasn’t until the 79th minute when Joseph “Jackie” Marrero, who made his professional debut with the Islanders deposited a ball inside the box, where Needham and Faña created a dangerous combination played that ended up in the back of the net.
Ty Shipalane gave the Railhawks the lead in the 87th minute.
