Bayamón, Puerto Rico (May 16, 2012) - The Puerto Rico Islanders won 3-0 when they received the Atlanta Silverbacks at Bayamón Soccer Complex. With this win, the PR Islanders maintain their lead of the North American Soccer League (NASL) standings with 16 points, position they hold since season started. Also, they remain undefeated at home since the beginning of last 2011 season.
The Puerto Rico Islanders dominated possession the ball since the beginning of the match, starting their offensive drive in the 6th minute when Gregory Richardson found the ball in the box and took a shot, but was greeted by a save from Joe Nasco.
The Atlanta Silverbacks didn't wait to answer, and in the 12th minute Reinaldo Navia infiltrated the Islanders’ defense, but he was denied by goalkeeper Richard Martin.
In the 28th minute, Jonathan Faña reached the box for an one-on-one with Silverbacks’ goalkeeper, but once again Nasco denied the Islanders’ ball. Seconds later Van Schaik took a corner that reached Ramos’ head, but went high above the crossbar.
After several attempts from both teams, first half ended Puerto Rico Islanders 0 - 0 Atlanta Silverbacks.
The real action was seen during the second half. In the 50th minute, Jonathan Faña received a foul in the box that resulted in a red card for Atlanta Silverbacks’ Martin Lancaster and a penalty shot for the Islanders. David Foley scored a headshot after the penalty shot he took bounced off the goalkeeper, giving the Puerto Rico Islanders a 1 - 0 lead.
After the first goal, the PR Islanders kept the game in the Silverbacks’ box. In the 77th minute mark, Hector “Pito” Ramos received a center from Jarad Van Schaik and made his second goal of the season. Ramos has made two goals in the last two games.
In the 83rd minute Tyler Wilson, who made his 2012 debut today with the Puerto Rico Islanders, scored an assist from Hansen and gave the Islanders their third and final goal. Match ended Puerto Rico Islanders 3 - 0 Atlanta Silverbacks.
The Piuerto Rico Islanders have a 5-0 goal streak since they came back from Fort Lauderdale last April 25th, and a 9-1 streak at home since season started. Also, this is Richard Martin’s fifth clean sheet this season.
The Puerto Rico Islanders continue their NASL action this Saturday May 19 when they visit the Carolina RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park.
