Bayamón, Puerto Rico (May 12, 2012) - The Puerto Rico Islanders defeated Fort Lauderdale Strikers tonight at Bayamón Soccer Complex, taking revenge for the loss they recieved last April 25th when they visited the Strikers. With this win, the PR Islanders maintain their lead of the North American Soccer League (NASL) standings with 13 points, position they hold since season started.
“It was a great victory. We played great soccer. I was pleased with the overall play from the boys. We turned over the ball cheaply sometimes, and we could’ve let a great team like Ft. Lauderdale back into the game. Now we have to look forward to our game against Atlanta on Wednesday. We’d like to invite all our fans to come support our team.” said Head Coach Adrian Whitbread.
The PR Islanders’ defense managed to keep the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at bay. In the 34th minute mark, Strikers’ Aly Hassan reached the box for an one-on one with Richard Martin, but was recieved with a great save by the Islander’s goalkeeper.
First goal of the match arrived in the 45th minute when forward David Foley sneaked behind the Strikers’ backline and scored a pass from Richardson, ending the first half Puerto Rico Islanders 1 - 0 Ft. Lauderdale Strikers.
Action started early in the second half, when in the 51st minute mark Hector “Pito” Ramos made his first goal with the Puerto Rico Islanders after an assistance from Fojo, giving his team a 2 - 0 lead over the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers.
The PR Islanders defense didn’t allow any goals, and after several failed attempts from the Strikers, match ended Puerto Rico Islanders 2 - 0 Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
The Puerto Rico Islanders continue their home stretch on May 16 when they face the Atlanta Silverbacks. The match will begin at 7:30p.m. and will take place at the Bayamón Soccer Complex. We encourage our fans to arrive early and to support our Islanders. There will also be free transportation between the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium and the Bayamon Soccer Complex. We hope to see you all there!
