Defender Marco Vélez returns to Islanders

The Puerto Rico Islanders announced the return of Defender Marco Vélez for this 2012 season, which continues this next Saturday, May 12th when the team receives the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Velez will be  fulfilling the function of Player-Coach, as well as community ambassador.

Marco Vélez debuted with the Islanders in 2005. During this season, he scored 2 goals in 22 games as a Defender. In 2008, he transferred to Toronto FC of the MLS. After starting in 31 of 38 games and scoring two goals, Vélez returned to the Puerto Rico Islanders in 2009.

“ I am very happy to be back again and be part of this team and great group. My role will be to help Adrian (Whitbread) inside and outside of the field. He can use me as a player we he needs to or if he needs me in the field helping him in anything that has to do with the outside game, well I will play that too. ” 

The Islanders return to action next Saturday, May 12th, when they square off the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at the Bayamón Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
