Head Coach Adrian Whitbread debuted as the new Manager of the Puerto Rico Islanders when the team squared off against Bayamon FC for its first preseason match. The Islanders fell 2-1 after dominating possession for most of the match. The “Tropa Naranja” plays its second game this Thursday at 4:00 p.m., when they face the Puerto Rico Under-20 team.
Last season’s leading goal scorer, Johnathan Faña gave the Islanders an early lead when his shot sailed wide after a brilliant pass from team captain Noah Delado. The team grabbed an early lead after Delgado made a brilliant pass to a streaking Islanders’ forward, putting the reigning CFU champions up 1-0.
The Islanders continued to dominate the first half with numerous opportunities from Hector “Pito” Ramos, Jarad van Schaik and Jonathan Faña, all looking for their first goal of the season.
The second half began with recently signed Yaw Danso and Tyler Wilson subbed into the match. Moments later, the up- and- coming Puerto Rican International, Joseph “Jackie” Marrero, made his debut for the Islanders.
Eloy Matos scored two second half goals to give Bayamon FC the 2-1 victory over the Islanders.
