Bayamón, PR (November 1, 2011) - The Puerto Rico Islanders, in partnership with Bayamon FC and the city of Bayamon, visited the Josefina Barcelo School and Herminia Rivera School this week as part of the Soccer 101 program.  The Soccer 101 program was established as a program to teach fundamental soccer skills and spread the development of soccer in schools across the Island.

"We had the opportunity to participate some very special children and have a good time with them teaching them the basics of soccer. The program is a tremendous idea and other people should do this too. This takes soccer in Puerto Rico to kids that might not have been that interested in the sport  before. Having this experience gives them the opportunity to learn a little bit of soccer and maybe motivate them to be more in the sport," said Alexis Rivera, Humanitarian of the Year of the Puerto Rico Islanders. 

"The players and the coaches developed basic soccer kicking drills which the students enjoyed. The kids had a great time. Their faces were worth a million dollars. The kids look up to the players and see them as something great. They enjoyed everything and we are very grateful that we professional soccer players visited our school today ", said Sharon Crespo, Physical Education Teacher of Herminia Rivera School. 

The Puerto Rico Islanders' front office as well as the Bayamon FC coaching staff were teaching the kids the fundamentals of soccer. The students participated in basic passing drills, kicking drills, and exercise designed help teach them how to work as a team.  Soccer 101 will take place for the rest of the year in various schools across the Island.

"The Soccer 101 program was excellent. The kids loved it as well. It's something different in the school. Cornejo and Orlando were very professional. Soccer in Bayamon is peak picking, it has all the skills. I hope the Soccer 101 program continues," said Haide Suárez, Physical Education Teacher at Josefina Barcelo School.
