This past Friday, October 21st, the Puerto Rico Islanders held their first annual award ceremony to recognize the players’ performance throughout all the 2011 season of the North American Soccer League (NASL), CONCACAF and CFU. The event, sponsored by Coca-Cola, took place at The Rose at El San Juan Hotel and Casino.
“It is something we have been trying to put together for the last couple of years. It is important to recognize individuals on and off the field. Thanks to all out sponsors, especially Coca-Cola for sponsoring the trophies. It was a great evening and we are looking to do it bigger and better next year,” said Head Coach Colin Clarke.
During the ceremony several of the players were honored by the Coaches, Staff, and Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Islanders. A total of eight awards were given to various players of the Orange Troop and a Special Merit Award was also awarded to one of the staff members recognizing their commitment to the team.
The Humanitarian Award, presented by Beatriz Quiñones, was given to the player who showed their unconditional commitment and involvement throughout the year with nonprofit organizations like Golitos for Autism, Go for it! Foundation, Susan G. Komen Foundation, SER of Puerto Rico, among others.
